Apple has posted a “technology brief” covering the various Unix technologies present in Panther. The fifteen-page PDF file provides a good overview of the different components that are included in Mac OS X 10.3. Even if you are among the well versed, the guide is worth a quick perusal.

Included with Mac OS X Server, the Watchdog process monitors certain applications and re-launches them if they unexpectedly quit. On hardware that supports automatic restarts (e.g., Xserves), Watchdog can also restart the computer when it detects the operating system has stopped responding (”system hang”). The best part is that you can configure Watchdog to monitor and automatically restart applications other than the defaults, as explained in an Apple Knowledge Base article on Watchdog.

We’ve been on the lookout for a good language-neutral integrated development environment (IDE), and the Eclipse project appears to be a very solid cross-platform solution. While it doesn’t support all languages natively, there are a ton of plugins available for it. Read more about Eclipse in an overview published earlier this week over on MacDevCenter.

Charles Arthur talks about PostArmor in a recent review for TidBITS. He lauds PostArmor’s ability to stop spam at the server, which unfortunately isn’t really what’s going on (it still downloads all the message headers). PostArmor appears to be a decent solution for those without direct control over their mail servers, but a better solution would be to find an ISP with powerful server-side spam filtering.

The DBD::mysql Perl module is used by many server software packages, but installing it on Panther can be problematic. A thread over at Mac OS X Hints contains a tip from someone at Apple that will solve most DBD::mysql install problems on Panther. (As always, don’t forget to install the Panther Developer Tools before attempting this or any other installations that compile software using gcc.)
Update: An updated hint is available.

Unveiled at the recent O’Reilly Mac OS X Conference, Mac Developer Journal is a new CD-based digital publication aimed at, oddly enough, Mac developers. A collaboration between O’Reilly and Macworld, the magazine is being offered at a charter rate of $49.95 per year. [Note: Publication of Mac Developer Journal ceased in mid-2004.]

A speaker at the recent O’Reilly Mac OS X Conference, James Reynolds covers Mac OS X scripting in a recent article for MacDevCenter. In this in-depth tutorial, James covers Perl and shell scripts, how to call these scripts or AppleScripts from one another, and a side-by-side comparison of common script tasks in Perl, BASH, and AppleScript.

Apple has posted instructions for setting up IP over FireWire on Mac OS X 10.3. This new Panther feature allows for computer-to-computer file transfers that are much faster than the 100 Mb networks currently in widespread use. Then again, if you have newer computers, gigabit Ethernet allows for even faster transfers with longer possible cable lengths. Is anyone out there using IP over FireWire? Gigabit Ethernet? Post a comment with your experiences and let us know what’s working best for you.

The Xserve, Power Mac G5, and Mac OS X software are causing an increasing number of IT managers to consider deploying Mac-based server solutions. BusinessWeek ran this story a few months ago, but it’s worth reading if you missed it the first time around.

As MacServers readers already know, Apple has wisely replaced sendmail with Postfix in Mac OS X 10.3, and a tip was recently posted on Mac OS X Hints on how to enable the Postfix mail transfer agent (MTA) in Panther. We’ll have more tips coming regarding mail server configuration in the near future, but at least this will allow folks to get their feet wet in the mean time.
