Upgrade OpenSSH to Fix Vulnerabilities

Given Apple’s retraction of the Mac OS X 10.2.8 update, the OpenSSH vulnerabilities present in prior versions of OS X remain unresolved. Thankfully, Mario Diana has put together a guide to upgrading OpenSSH on 10.2.x. Following the provided steps will fix the recently-discovered security problems by installing newer versions of OpenSSL and OpenSSH.

New Python Development Tools for Mac OS X

Sarwat Khan has released three new development tools for Python programmers: userdefaults, plistservices, and CFPython. These the first two tools make it easier to read/write preference data on OS X, while the third offers better integration between Python and the CoreFoundation API. Given the shortage of Python development tools for Mac OS X, this is indeed good news. If you find these tools useful, please be sure to let Sarwat know how much you appreciate his efforts.

SpamAssassin Configuration Fix

SpamAssassin users with certain configurations may find that messages they receive are mistakenly flagged as spam coming from open relays. The problem, discussed in more detail on the Use Perl site (along with a fix), appears to be caused by a distributed denial of service attack on open relay blacklist maintainer Osirusoft, who is now returning back every IP as a spam source when queried.
